関係副詞の why は、表現として覚えておくと便利です。

文法知識としてよく登場するので、訳し方や文構造を正確にすることが大事です。

まずは関係副詞の why を使った文がどのような訳になるのかのイメージをつかんでみましょう。

ここでは、そんな関係副詞の why について説明していきます。

関係副詞whyの訳し方

次の例文を見てみましょう。

This is why I didn’t agree with him.

（そういうわけで、私は彼に賛成しなかった。）

ここでの why が関係副詞です。「～の理由」という意味がありますが、this is why～ で、「そういうわけで～」という訳になります。

This is why～ という表現としてもよく出るので、まとめて覚えておきましょう。

さて、関係副詞は関係代名詞と同様に先行詞を伴うのが原則ですが、上記の例文では why の前にあるのは is というbe動詞であり、先行詞ではありません。

このような関係副詞の whyですが、理屈は通常の関係副詞と同様になります。

それでは、This is why I didn’t agree with him という文を、以下のように書き換えてみます。

This is the reason which I didn’t agree with him for.

これは、先行詞が the reason で「理由」という意味に、そして関係代名詞 which を伴い、I didn’t agree with him for と続けています。

訳は同じで、「そういうわけで私は彼に賛成しなかった。」となります。

直訳すると、「これが、私が彼に賛成しなかった理由です。」となりますが、日本語としては「そういうわけで、私は彼に賛成しなかった。」としても、違和感がありません。

それでは、この文を詳しく見ていきましょう。

This is the reason which I didn’t agree with him for.

というのは、以下の二つの文を、関係代名詞 which を使って一つにしたものになります。

This is the reason.

（これが、その理由です。）

I didn’t agree with him for it.

（それにより、私は彼に賛成しなかった。）

では、二番目の文の it の指すものを考えてみましょう。

それは、一番目の文の the reason のことです。つまり、

I didn’t agree with him for the reason.

ということで、「その理由により、私は彼に賛成しなかった。」ということになります。

この場合の for the reason は、意味としては「その理由により」となります。

そしてこの二つの文を一つにするとき、This is the reason までは最初の文のままで、この後に the reason を先行詞にして関係代名詞 which を使用して表現します。

the reason which I didn’t agree with him for で、「私が彼に賛成しなかった理由」となります。

もとの文の I didn’t agree with him for it.の it は、the reason のことで、関係代名詞 which を使って一文にするときには、すでに先行詞として登場しています。

ですので、the reason which の後の文は、I didn’t agree with him for it から、最後の it を抜いて、I didn’t agree with him for だけを続けます。

こうして、                                                    

This is the reason which I didn’t agree with him for.

という文が出来上がり、「これが、私が彼に賛成しなかった理由です。」となり、

「そういうわけで、私は彼に賛成しなかった」

という意味になります。

最初に示した関係副詞 how の例文の、

This is why I didn’t agree with him.

（そういうわけで、私は彼に賛成しなかった。）

と同じ訳になります！

前置詞＋関係代名詞＝関係副詞

さて、それでは上記で示した関係副詞の文と関係代名詞の文の関係を見ていきます。

関係副詞は、「前置詞＋関係代名詞」という形で置き換えが可能です。

関係代名詞の例文の、

This is the reason which I didn’t agree with him for.

というのは、関係詞節（上記の例文なら、which I didn’t agree with him for の部分）の最後の前置詞を関係代名詞の前に置くことができます。

つまり、

This is the reason for which I didn’t agree with him.

という置き換えが可能です。

そして、前置詞＋関係代名詞である for which は、関係副詞の why に置き換えることができます。

つまり、

This is the reason why I didn’t agree with him.

となります。

ここで、この why を省略したり、the reason を省略したりすることもできます。

This is the reason I didn’t agree with him.

や、

This is why I didn’t agree with him.

となります。

二番目の文は、最初に示した関係副詞の例文と同じですね。

このような関係副詞の how ですが、もともとは前置詞＋関係代名詞で置き換えができるので、理屈としては通常の関係副詞と同様です。

まとめ

関係副詞の how については、this is why～ で「そういうわけで～」という表現がよく出ます。

それに加えて、関係副詞の why の理屈もおさえておきましょう。

また、慣れる意味でも訳に注意してみてください。

以下に問題を加えておきます。

上記の例文と同じにしますので、何パターンかに書き換えてみましょう。

＜問題＞

次の英文を、四通りに書き換えましょう。

This is the reason which I didn’t agree with him for.

＜解答＞

This is the reason for which I didn’t agree with him.

This is the reason why I didn’t agree with him.

This is the reason I didn’t agree with him.

This is why I didn’t agree with him.

最初の文は、for which というように、関係詞節の for を関係代名詞 which の前に持ってきました。

次の文は、関係副詞の why で置き換えたものです。

三番目の文は、「the reason why～」から why を省略した文になり、最後の文は、「the reason why」から the reason を省略した文となります。

ちなみに、目的格の関係代名詞は省略できるので、問題の文は which を省略して

This is the reason I didn’t agree with him for.

とすることもできます。こちらも正解です。
